Saudi Arabia Could Boost Oil Production Soon

21 March 22

In 2021, the state-owned Saudi Aramco reported more than double the profits compared to 2020. The net profits have grown from $49bn in 2020 to $110bn in 2021. Not to mention, the oil giant plans to significantly boost outputs over the coming five years.

Why is this important, you ask? Well, currently, the global oil demand outweighs the supply resulting in record-high prices. This could be attributed to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the western world’s apprehension about relying on Russia for energy. Another factor of rising oil prices is the world’s recovery from COVID-19, people are traveling again, supply chains are ramping up back to pre-pandemic levels, the world needs fuel to start rolling again.

Saudi Aramco sees the high global oil prices as a great opportunity to further increase profits. It is likely that Saudi Aramco’s commitment to increase outputs would be well received by political leaders.

Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, visited Saudi Arabia last week in an attempt to urge the nation to release more oil into global markets in the short term. If Saudi Aramco were to increase oil output, the oil prices, which are currently at a 14-year high, would drop significantly.

Some have concerns when it comes to outreaching to the Saudi Arabian oil giant, going as far as calling it going from one dictator to another in pursuit of cheaper energy. Saudi Arabia has been criticized for many human rights cases of abuse, such as its involvement in the Yemen conflict, the jailing of dissidents, and wide use of the death penalty.

Unfortunately, a quick resolution of rising oil prices is unlikely. Saudi Aramco plans to increase the output of oil throughout a 5-8 year period, meaning that the oil price would drop gradually over a longer period of time. It is essential to start looking at other energy alternatives to limit the western world’s dependency on oil.
